“To Have & To Hold”- They’re Survivors. OUR survivors.

Praise God for Survivors.

“One of the expressions of God’s kindness is the way he is bringing us together from so many languages, nations, and cultures to grow in love together.” K. Vandenbrink, Pastor, New City Fellowship

We have several members of our church who have found refuge in St. Louis after many of their tribe & family were slaughtered in a refugee camp in Burundi, Africa. Our pastor & others from our church went to the memorial gathering, with many tears, last weekend in New York. “This is the 3rd anniversary of the massacre that took the lives of over 150, including 16 family members of those in our church.”

“For more information on this gathering and these members of our church community, please see On this web site you will find a link to an article in the NY times that mentions a woman from our church.

“To Have & To Hold.” “This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.” Eph. 5:32 Marriage was the best example that our Lord felt He could give us to help us understand the church. As Christ’s church, we have an eternal bond with each other & with God. Our church has these refugees who have a lot to teach us. And now they need us to “have them & to hold them.” We belong to each other as God’s holy church. One in His Spirit. One in His blood. “After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.” Revelation 7:9 Soon Christ Himself will wipe every tear from their eyes, but for now, it’s up to us. Because they belong with us. At our wedding ceremony, we said, “until we are united forever with the body of Christ,” instead of “til death do us part.” Because I wanted people to remember that Christ’s church is eternal & that we belong forever to each other.

I hope to be a friend to these youth in particular. I see a light in their eyes, an innocence. A true beauty in their souls. They seem like souls that have traveled so far, so long, & have walked a thousand roads to get to this place. Ever since I first met them, I’ve looked into their eyes & the one thing that I’ve wanted them to feel is that they belong with us. It can be a struggle to convey that. May God connect us despite our language barriers.

Pray with me. “God bless them! Have mercy on these people dear Lord. Give them more light. Father, help them to share that Light, that Hope, that Eternal Hope with all of us. Let them teach us & let us hold them. Oh Jesus help us.”
